The Myth of Thamyris

NEMESIS ALWAYS LEADS TO REDEMPTION

In Greek mythology, Thamyris (Greek: Θάμυρις), son of Philammon and the nymph Argiope, was a Greek poet of Thracian descent, who after bragging about his skills in the art of music he dared to challenge the Muses into a contest. His unbridled frenzy actuated him to even ask as a quid pro quo to sleep with each and every one of the Goddesses after his presumable victory. Much to his amazement, he lost, triggering the astringent Nemesis to come to effect. His punishment delivered by the Muses themselves. They blinded and deprived him of the art of playing his beloved lyre.

Brought to his knees, Thamyris raged on, seething by the relentless consequences of his Hubris. Unfortunately, his wrath bared no yield. In an act of pure desperation, he hurled his lyre away which eventually found resting place in Messenia where the fallen man sought shelter from the shame. According to myth, Thamyris’ pain and sorrow made the Gods pity him. Zeus, the greatest of the Olympians and upright judge of both Gods and men stroke with a thunderbolt the very spot where Thamyris’ barren lyre rested triggering the birth of an olive tree.

The symbolism of the broken lyre and the Hubris which it had been representing had given its place to this newly germinated tree that would enclave the spirit, virtues, and dreams of Hellenism. As for poor Thamyris, that meant only one thing, a Catharsis! Our hero was now redeemed. From then on, the olive tree was rendered the perennial “victory and peace bearer” the fame of which echoes through the ages unveiling, to those who heed the call, the secret to longevity and well -being.

Thamyris and his legacy live on. It can, indeed, be traced to our modern days as it kindled the inspiration for naming the nearby Greek hamlet by the name of Valíra. The name derives from the ancient Greek verb βάλλω/ˈva.lo (hurl) and the noun λύρα/ˈli.ra (lyre).

The Estate

A CENTENNIAL LEGACY

Our company’s estate is a rustic olive farm located in northern Messenia. Among verdant hills, with a river flowing along the southern frontier of the estate offering irrigation, and the unique micro-climate of the area, our estate has the optimum conditions to produce of one of the most upscale olive oil and olives in the world.

True to our vision, sustainable farming is one of our company’s major concerns. In Greek farming culture, already from ancient times, the harmonization between the various forces that govern nature is heavily sought after.

We, Greeks, heed the atmospheric phenomena, positions of the constellations in the cosmos, seasons and lunar cycles, always seeking balance between soil, trees, animals and man.

Adhering to the holistic farming practices, we are also trying to reduce industrial fertilize use, so we use wood chipping equipment for the excess olive tree branches from pruning, enriching the vegetation cover with organic matter. We have also introduced to the farm a diversified sum of livestock comprising of sheep and goats in order to provide our trees with an alternative, more efficient nurturing source, creating our own fertilizer through composting.

A meteo station is also set to be installed with subsequent deployment of sensors throughout the estate, indicating the current soil and environmental conditions in order for us to be kept vigilant to our olive tree needs ensuring that our products’ quality and nutritional value are up to par with the highest standards. The aforementioned practices subsequently lead to an ameliorated extra virgin olive oil quality with major health and well-being benefits.

A paramount component of olive oil is monounsaturated fats, mainly oleic acid. Limited and not conclusive scientific evidence suggests that consuming about 2 tablespoons (23 grams) of olive oil daily may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease due to the monounsaturated fat in olive oil. To achieve this possible benefit, olive oil should replace a similar amount of saturated fat and not increase the total number of calories you eat in a day.
